Metal Halide Lamps are high intensity discharge lamps (HID) that are known for their compact size, high performance and efficient output. They are available in various colors, designs and sizes and are widely used in residential household applications as well as commercial and industrial applications. They are widely used in Aquarium Lighting.
As Metal halide Lamps have a very high internal pressure and temperature inside, they require a specially designed fixture to operate safely. Metal Halide Lamps have a tube filled with Argon, Mercury and varieties of Metal halides. They have two electrodes joined by an arc. While Fluorescent bulbs contain the element named Phosphor to generate light, the light in metal halide lamps comes from this arc itself. They are more efficient than Incandescent and Fluorescent Bulbs as they consume less energy and give high performance white output. They also last longer than traditional bulbs.
Metal Halide Bulbs General use and Precautions
Metal Halide Light Bulbs emit ultraviolet lights therefore they must be used with utmost care. Ultraviolet lights can damage the eyes and skin if used directly. Therefore Metal Halide Light Bulbs should only be used in lighting equipments and fixtures that have a filter glass with ultraviolet absorbing capability. Metal Halide Bulbs should never be used with equipment that does not have a filter glass or has a damaged glass. As metal halide lamps have a high internal pressure inside, they must not be used in damaged and ruptured equipment. Also, No parts of the bulb should be changed when the bulb is switched on. If it got burst, it may create lots of damage around. The lamps should not be touched with bare hands when lit as they may be very hot and can cause serious burns.
Metal Halide Bulbs and Lamps range from 50 watt to 1500 watt. They have a longer rated life and are an energy efficient source of light.
